PC labs Computing Rules

These pages cover the Windows PCs in EML (616 Evans), Field Research Office Computers, and personally managed machines using services provided on the department Windows servers.

Economics Department Windows accounts are available to current Economics graduate students, staff, permanent and visiting faculty through the CalNet authentication system.

The Department PC Systems use Windows Active Directory

Please register your CalNet ID with the Department System Administrators. You can pick up a paper form from the document rack in the hallway near the main department office (530 Evans Hall), or email econ@lscr.ls.berkeley.edu and request a form, then complete, print, and sign the form. Return the form to 687 Evans for activation. (Get Adobe® Reader®)

If you do not sign-up, you will NOT be able to use the department graduate PC machines even with a valid CalNet identity.

  1. Press these 3 keys down at the same time to log on: Ctrl, Alt, and Delete
  2. Your user login will be your CalNet ID. The domain should be set to CAMPUS.
  3. Ensure that you LOGOFF using either the shortcut provided on your desktop or via START -> Log Off.

The relevant section is under 'Email Settings'. Our configuration differs slightly from CalMail. Other information concerning email may be found from the main department computing page.

A 'Message of the Day' is displayed on your first login after it has been updated. Please check this for service notices and announcements.

Machines in Park Avenue will forcibly log you out after 20 minutes idle time. You will receive a 5 minute countdown after the first 15 minutes of idle time. Any open applications will be forced to quit when the logout occurs. You will lose unsaved data.

Field Research Office machines will lock after 20 minutes of idle time. Only the current user or an administrator can unlock the machine. If an administrator does it, unsaved data may be lost.

If you encounter any problems with your use of Park Avenue, send email to econ@lscr.ls.berkeley.edu . Do not send messages to the Econometrics Laboratory (i.e., do not send messages to trouble, manager, consult, or postmaster as you would if you encountered problems with one of the Suns).
