Visiting the Department of Economics

Visiting Scholars:

The Department of Economics does not administer a formal visiting scholar application process; visits are by faculty invitation only, subject to prior approval from the Department Chair.

Visiting Graduate Students:

The Department does not host Visiting Student Researchers (VSR), as defined by item #29 of the Visiting Scholar and Postdoctoral Affairs program, unless such visits are sponsored through a Department Center or an established program (e.g. IVEO or International Concurrent Enrollment - see below). Under exceptional circumstances, the Department Chair may grant approval for faculty to sponsor a VSR.

  • International Visitors Exchange Office

It may be possible to visit the Department by applying through the International Visitors and Exchange Office. The Department accepts only a limited number of applications each academic year. For a list of participating schools and information about the application process, go to: http://iveo.berkeley.edu/international_partners

  • UC Extension International Concurrent Enrollment

Faculty may sponsor graduate (and undergraduate) students to visit the Department for a semester or one year through the UC Extension International Concurrent Enrollment Program. This program is a full-time and directed course of study that requires students to register for a minimum amount of units in economics (9 for graduate students), pay associated application fees, and provide proof of English fluency. The application deadline for the Fall semester is typically in the first week of July and, for Spring, early to mid-November.

A faculty member must agree to sponsor a student to participate in this program, which is subject to prior approval from the Department Chair. The Department's graduate advisor facilitates the formal invitation and provides application materials in coordination with the Chair's office.

Fees:

Effective January 1, 2010, the Department of Economics will charge a $500 per semester or $1000 per academic year fee for all categories of visitors without a teaching or research appointment in the Department. This includes the titles of Visiting Student Researcher, Visiting Post-doc and Visiting Scholar. This fee will be $300 if the stay is for the summer only. These fees are in addition to the visa processing and SEVIS fees, and the VSPA fees imposed by the campus. Checks should be made payable to UC Regents. The Department will collect the fees upon the visitor's arrival to Berkeley. Visitors invited by Department Centers will not be subject to this fee. The Department Chairman reserves the right to waive the fee under special circumstances.
