All students must submit test scores for the General GRE. We do not require the subject GRE. The GRE's may not be substituted with the GMAT. Tests should be taken in October, but no later than December. Students with scores below 760 on the Quantitative portion of the GRE should retake the test. Scores from tests taken before October 2004 are no longer valid. If you took the GRE between October 2004 and the time of application, you need to order the reports to be sent to the department. Make sure that the institution and department codes are correct when ordering reports to be sent. The department keeps GRE reports for two years. Reports sent in 2007 are no longer available. When you receive the score report, please forward a copy to the Department of Economics. Do not wait for the report and delay the mailing of your application materials. Also, do not rely on ETS to send the reports on time. To insure timely receipt of GRE scores please Fed-Ex or fax them to us as soon as you receive them.

All applicants who received their degree from an institution in a non-English speaking country are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This includes US citizens who received their degree abroad even if they attended highschool in the US. You do NOT have to take the test if you received your degree from a US institution or if at the time of application you completed one full year of study in a US institution or an institution in an English speaking country. For purposes of admission, your most recent score must be at least 570 for the paper-and-pencil test or at least 230 for the computer-based test, or at least 68 for the Internet-based test (iBT). If your score is below these scores you must retake the TOEFL. The Graduate Division makes no exception to this policy. The TOEFL cannot be substituted with the TSE or English courses. Scores from tests taken before June 2007 are no longer valid. ETS does not send the department paper scores for the TOEFL so be sure to include a copy of the TOEFL report with your application or send us a copy as soon as you receive the scores. To insure timely receipt of TOEFL scores please Fed-Ex or fax them to us as soon as you receive them.
While you are not required to do so, you may include a resume and/or writing sample in your application. You must submit the optional supporting documents VIA MAIL ONLY. We will not accept these items via email.
